Gothic Elopement Photographer UK

Meet the Photographer
Hey, my name is SHABAAN
I’m an elopement and wedding photographer based in the Midlands, and my work naturally sits in darker, moodier territory. I shoot with an editorial preset and an editorial eye that gravitates toward weight, shadow, and atmosphere before it reaches for brightness. That’s not a style I switch on for certain bookings. It’s how I see. I always aim for Vogue polish.
Before you think "anyone can shoot moody", I also am someone who is apart of the subculture. I listen to Ethel Cain for one, I wear rings, crosse and I say this not because it matters to the photos but because if you’re searching for a gothic elopement photographer, you probably want to know that the person behind the camera actually understands the aesthetic you’re drawn to and not someone who Googled “gothic wedding” last week and added it to their services page.
I’ve shot at St Ives in Cornwall in exactly the conditions that create this atmosphere: blue hour on the cliffs, wind pulling at everything, the chapel going dark against the sky. That work is some of my favourite I’ve ever produced. It’s not a departure from my usual style. It’s my usual style with the volume turned up.
If you’re planning an elopement that’s darker, heavier, and more atmospheric than what most photographers are offering — somewhere with ruins, coastline, old stone, or open sky — this is what I do.
What This Looks Like
The Locations
Clifftops where the wind doesn’t stop. Ruined abbeys open to the sky. Castle walls that have been crumbling since before anyone alive was born. Graveyards overlooking the sea. Underground caverns lit by candles. Beaches where the rocks are harder than the sand. The UK has more of this than almost anywhere in the world, and most elopement photographers walk straight past it to find the nearest meadow.
I’ve written a full guide to gothic elopement locations across the UK. From St Ives, Whitby, Tutbury Castle, Castell Coch, Dunnottar Castle, Tintern Abbey, Carnglaze Caverns. Each one creates the atmosphere without needing any styling. Read here
The Light
Blue hour. Overcast skies. Dusk. The 30 minutes after sunset when colour drains out of everything and the stone goes dark against the sky. This is when the locations on that list become genuinely gothic rather than just scenic. I don’t chase golden hour for these shoots. I chase the light that makes things feel heavier, colder, and more real.
The Couple
Black clothing. Darker palettes. Tattoos. Piercings. Flowing fabric that catches the wind. Boots instead of heels. The couples who book me for this aren’t performing an aesthetic for the camera — they’re being themselves. My job is to meet them where they are, not to direct them into something they’re not. The best shots happen when you forget the camera is there and just exist in the space.
The Weather
Rain is not a problem. Wind is not a problem. Overcast is not a problem. These are features, not bugs. A gothic elopement on a bright sunny day in July is fighting against itself. The same location in November with the sky pressing down and the wind cutting through — that’s the version that actually works. I don’t reschedule for grey skies. I book for them.

how I Work
We start with a conversation. You tell me what you’re imagining — the location, the vibe, the time of day, what you’re wearing. I tell you what I think will work from a photography perspective and we build the plan together. I’ll suggest timing based on the light at your chosen location, flag practical considerations (terrain, access, weather backup), and make sure we’re aligned on the look before the day.
On the day, I’m not directing a photoshoot. I’m moving with you through the location, responding to the light and the space, giving you gentle prompts when they’re needed and stepping back when they’re not. The atmosphere does most of the work. My job is to capture it honestly rather than manufacturing something that isn’t there.
I travel across the UK for elopements. Cornwall, Wales, Yorkshire, Scotland, the Midlands — wherever the location calls for it. Travel is either included or quoted separately depending on distance.
Your gallery is delivered within 6-8 Weeks. Sneak peeks within 72 hours (up to 10 photos)

FAQ

Have you shot gothic elopements before?
Yes. I’ve photographed same-sex proposals and elopements, including work at Dyffryn Gardens in Cardiff. My broader portfolio includes diverse couples across all types of weddings. This isn’t new territory for me.
What if it rains?
Rain adds atmosphere. It darkens stone, creates texture on surfaces, and makes everything feel more intense. I don’t reschedule for rain. I plan for it. The only weather I’d suggest rescheduling for is a genuine storm that makes the location unsafe and I’ll make that call with you based on the specific conditions.
Where do you recommend?
I’ve written a full guide to gothic elopement locations in the UK covering St Ives, Whitby, Tutbury Castle, Castell Coch, Dunnottar Castle, Tintern Abbey, and Carnglaze Caverns. Each one offers a different register of gothic — from coastal cliffs to underground caverns.

What about the legal ceremony?
In England and Wales, most of these locations aren’t licensed for legal ceremonies, so you’ll need a separate civil ceremony at a registry office (before or on the day) and then a celebrant ceremony at your chosen gothic location. In Scotland, you can legally marry almost anywhere with an approved celebrant. I cover the full legal process in my Gretna Green Guide for Scotland Elopements here
Tell me about your plans: the date, the venue, the vibe,. I’ll tell you honestly whether I’m the right photographer for your day.
