SO! Emma & John! My Loveliest of latest couples got married on June 26 2026 at The Lodge Mesnes Park, Wigan.
Now, that sounds like a normal wedding, but the catch(s)? Well, there was an ongoing heatwave, a surprise car, and both my bride and groom were required to survive a 30 degree heatwave in a full-piece suit and full-veil alike with no aircon because the UK thought heat was a thing you could just opt out of.
The wedding itself was a small civil ceremony. It contained close family and friends with little to no fuss over a seating plan, no awkwardness of sitting next to someone you've not seen since Year 11 and no 200 people watching you walk down an aisle. Emma & John wanted it to mean something without the huge theatrics.
I'll be talking about how the day ran, the coverage, the spacing, all of it. If you're planning a wedding at The Lodge, Mesnes Park, or if a smaller short civil ceremony can still produce genuine moments reflecting without requiring you to remortgage a home (to which the answer is yes) then this post is for you.
The Lodge, Mesnes Park: What It's Actually Like
The Bridal Room
The bridal prep room is on the ground floor on the right; right about as you walk into the Lodge. Inside it has a mirror, chair, small table, and enough room for you to get ready in and also have your bridesmaids cheer you on; but on the edgeside during the summer the room can become a miniature oven due to the fact that you cannot open any windows or lift any blinds unless you want a guest seeing you in your dress before anyone else.
We had two fans in on our day and that didn't stop the summer heat at all, so when you're booking, ask if the venue can accommodate some form of cooling, or be prepared to ask a friend to bring a AC.
The Ceremony Room
This room is downstairs and open enough that you can walk behind people (the registrar's included) and can get angles that you usually would not from a standard civil room! It also lets you capture wider shots of the guests too, so you can always get mum and dad crying from multiple angles.
The only thing I'd point out is there are windows across one side of the room making it a very visible path from the park so onlookers are possible if it's boiling hot and whilst it leads out to a garden path with some trees covering the sun, enough light can often seep through that it can shift your images to being slightly inconsistent (depending on the sun and clouds). It's something worth mentioning to your photographer beforehand.
The room keeps its own floral displays too, and they're good enough to shoot on their own — nobody in the gallery needs to know they didn't cost you a florist's invoice.
The Lodge, Mesnes Park: What Went Well
A surprise car!
Heatwave drama aside, there was some genuinely GOOD moments at this wedding (duh), but a main one was that John had actually arranged a surprise for Emma (that not even I knew was happening)! It was a properly decorated ford vintage wedding car, with one that was waiting since the ceremony had wrapped! Neither me or Emma had planned around it which was what made the moments after feel much more on the go.
We got some stunning shots, from a rearview mirror kissing shot, to staged shots of them driving away, it was genuinely one of the more exciting moments on the job because I was allowed to just work with the moment and not have planned it in 30 pinterest boards ago.
Bride and Dad
There was also a quieter moment earlier. Emma and her dad, stood outside The Lodge, just hugging each other. It was a lot for both of them, and I'm glad the two shared a moment to breathe without panicking.
The Lodge, Mesnes Park: What Was Harder
This one is harder to pin on the venue, and more a failing of british architecture. Our buildings are MADE to trap heat in. Making a wedding party of 30+ all look like they're not melting wax figures was a challenge. Guests will complain, moan, and the makeup of bridesmaids alike will slide and energy will be at a low before portraits start. If you're marrying in a heatwave build:
Shade breaks. A must. Make sure your couples can stand under trees, make sure if you're a bride you and your party can hide in shade for ten minutes and have a hydration break here and there. The Lodge, Mesnes Park, had a bunch of outdoor trees we could use to our advantage.
Scheduling. Do not schedule stuff in the middle of the day because its no overcast. You might be okay, but others won't. Think of logistics and not pinterest. You need flatter ground, less walking, less distance between locations and no rushing. We had kids at our wedding so we had to take into consideration the heat would only make things if we took them outside the shade. Neither derailed anything, it's simply just what happened on the day and its how you adapt that matters.
Slowing your wedding down isn't a negativity for future summers, its just a safer way to enjoy the biggest moment of your life.

Am I Right For Your Wedding?
If you're marrying at The Lodge, or anywhere else in Mesnes Park, this is a fair preview of what that venue actually gives you! (Heatwave subject to weather)!
Most my work is editorial but I'm not the type of person to make every shot feel rigid and fake, no. I prompt more than pose, I go for documentary during the ceremony, I don't interrupt, and I don't dictate. During family photos and such I call over and make them feel quick and frameable, not the dramatic type where everyone needs a certain feeling or look.
If your day is more flexible, fun, and has people who need more time, a route where mobility needs to be considered, a kid whose hyperactive, then having done that before, I'm willing to say I can do it over and over again because everyone deserves that.
Now. If you're more a "we want a full-day film alongside this and that", then slow the brakes! We can work on all the goodies after, let's first see the plan!
