Proposal Photographer, Birmingham

Meet the Photographer
Hey, my name is SHABAAN
Hi. I’m Shabaan.
I’m a photographer based in the Midlands and I photograph surprise proposals across Birmingham, the West Midlands, and further afield when the location calls for it. Cardiff. Manchester. Wherever the plan is.
The job is simple in theory and completely nerve-wracking in practice: stay invisible until the right moment, then make sure every frame from that moment is actually usable. I’ve been described as “a ninja hiding among the flowers.” I’ll take it.
If you’re planning a proposal in Birmingham or the Midlands and you want it documented properly without the photographer giving the game away, without staged setups, without images that look like a different couple had a photoshoot at the same location then that's me.
Why Book Me for Your Surprise proposal Photoshoot?
I’ve Done This Before
Real proposals, real locations, real surprise. Not a styled shoot with a couple who knew the photographer was there. The Dyffryn Gardens proposal in the portfolio below is an example. The couple had no idea I was there until after the question was asked. That’s what discreet actually means. Same with the Manchester proposal too.
Birmingham Is Home Ground
I know the city. Brindleyplace and the canal network. The Jewellery Quarter. Digbeth. The Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston. Cannon Hill Park at golden hour. If you’re still working out where to propose in Birmingham, I’m happy to have that conversation. I know which spots work photographically and which ones look better on Google Maps than they do in real life.
I Travel Across the Midlands and Beyond
Sure I live in Birmingham, but I cover the full Midlands too. From Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire to beyond. I travel further for the right brief. Cardiff, Manchester, further afield. Travel within the Midlands is included. Anything outside, I’ll quote it straight.
The Photos Look Like Photos, Not a Proposal Package
There’s a version of proposal photography that looks like a wedding venue brochure. Posed couple, soft focus background, vaguely romantic. That’s not this. My work is editorial, cinematic, moody some call it. It's the same eye I use for weddings and elopements, applied to the moment before all of that starts. The emotion, the location, the light. Real photos from a real moment.
After the Yes
Once the proposal has happened and the surprise is out, we move into a short couples session. This means portraits in the same location while the moment is still fresh. No lengthy posing session. Just the two of you, still in the feeling of what just happened, photographed properly. These are usually the best images of the day.

What People Said
★★★★★
“Hiring Shabaan to capture our surprise proposal at the beautiful National Trust Dyffryn Gardens was the best decision we made! We needed a local Cardiff photographer who could be totally discreet, and Shabaan was a true professional — he was like a ninja hiding among the flowers! He was incredible during the planning stage, helping us coordinate the perfect spot and time. He managed to capture the genuine, raw emotion of the moment without us even knowing he was there. The photos he delivered later are absolutely breathtaking! They perfectly capture the beauty of the gardens and every single tear, smile, and hug from that magical day. If you are looking for a trustworthy, talented, and discreet proposal photographer who knows the Cardiff and South Wales area, hire Shabaan immediately. We will cherish these forever!'

What to Expect When You Book
We start with a conversation about the plan. Where, when, roughly how you’re thinking it goes. I’ll ask about the location, the timing, how long you’ll be there, and how you’re getting your partner to the right spot without them getting suspicious. If you’re still figuring it out, that’s fine. I’ve helped plan proposals before and I’m happy to work through the logistics with you.
Before the day, I’ll visit or research the location so I know exactly where to position myself and when to move. The cover story is yours to manage! My job is to be somewhere nearby that doesn’t raise questions. On the day I arrive early, find my spot, and wait. You don’t need to signal me. I’ll know when it’s happening.
After the proposal, once she knows I’m there, we move into portraits. Relaxed, nothing forced, in the same location while the moment is still alive. Most couples are so caught up in what just happened that the portraits look after themselves.
Gallery turnaround is fast. You’ll have images to share quickly I’ll give you a specific timeframe when we book. Sneak peeks are guaranteed within 72 hours however, so you'll always be given something to break the news with.
FAQ

What if my partner spots you?

It hasn’t happened yet. I find a position that works with the location! Sometimes that’s a bench with a long lens, sometimes it’s behind something, sometimes it’s just moving naturally through a public space like anyone else. We talk through the specific location beforehand so I know what I’m working with. I also might act like I'm on the phone, talking to other people nearby, the standard.

Can you help me plan how to propose in Birmingham?

Yes, and I’m happy to. The Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston, Cannon Hill Park, the Jewellery Quarter, Brindleyplace, the canal network near Broad Street! They all work well for different reasons depending on what you want the photos to look like. For more ideas and full planning advice, read our guide to planning a proposal in Manchester. Different city but the same principles apply. Read Here

What do we wear

Honestly, anything you'd normally wear but a bit smarter. I tell all my couples to come dressed in smart-casual and it helps telling your partner you're going out for a fine evening than just a standard stroll to explain why you've dressed up and why they should too without giving it away.

How long before the proposal should I book you?

As soon as you have a date and location in mind. Two weeks minimum gives us enough time to plan properly. A month is better. The more time we have to talk through the logistics, the smoother the day runs.

Say hello. Let's work together.
